New utility helps WebCT users share learning content
Vendors of integrated learning systems WebCT have released a new utility that allows users to import or export content from WebCT's e-learning system in an IMS-compliant format.
The IMS Content Migration Utility is designed to allow both learning content and assessment information to be saved for import into other IMS-compliant applications, or to import compliant materials from other sources.
This enables institutions to share course materials and question sets, and import materials from publishers adopting the IMS content packaging standards. For example, publishers McGraw-Hill Higher Education, who worked with WebCT on the development of the utility, are integrating it with their content publishing system to allow WebCT users to quickly integrate McGraw-Hill learning materials into their courses.
The release of a stand-alone import and export utility is a simple and convenient method for software companies to provide standards compatibility without incurring substantial redevelopment costs. However, it remains to be seen if vendors are willing to integrate standards into the core of their product offerings.
The IMS Content Migration Utility can be used with WebCT 3.1.3, 3.5 and 3.6, and supports IMS Content Packaging 1.1 and IMS Question & Test Interoperability 1.1 formats. For more information, click here
