Cisco to work with OUNL on EML, eLearning research
The Open University of the Netherlands (OUNL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Cisco Systems, Inc. to "build a string strategic relationship for developing and deploying e-learning environments".
The Memorandum covers four areas:
- Advancing e-learning specifications & standards agreements, particularly in the areas of learning design and content management
- Pilot implementations of EML, both within Cisco and beyond, and to find opportunities to further its development
- Collaboration on R&D in eLearning. For example, Cisco will contribute to the foundation of one or more e-learning demo centres, which the OUNL is currently planning to build
- Collaboration on e-learning projects in the European context, including EC-funded projects. According to an OUNL press release, Cisco and OUNL are "already collaborating in the field of European project development"
Cisco will also be evaluating EML and Edubox, the EML 'player' spun off from the OUNL to Perot Systems (more on this story). In return, OUNL will evaluate Cisco’s network equipment.
If Cisco adopt EML in their eLearning activities, such as the Cisco Network Academy, this will be a significant boost for the specification in the commercial sector. Currently, the OUNL and a number of other academic institutions use EML and Edubox.
