CanCore release new metadata guidelines Scott Wilson, CETIS staff
April 19, 2002
CanCore, the Canadian metadata profile, has two new documents providing guidelines on how to use the Lifecycle and General element groupings in the IMS Metadata specification.
The guidelines provide developers and cataloguers working to the CanCore profile with detailed information on how to use particular metadata elements.
Application profiles like CanCore provide implementers within a specific community (Canada in this case) with recommended practices for using global specifications.
This is useful because global specifications by their nature have to be generic whereas particular communities of practice need to be more specific.
For example, when specifying the "educational level" of a learning object it is useful to be able to relate this value to the type of qualifications available in your country - such as provided by the MEG educational levels table.
