The Open Archives Initiative (OAI) has released a beta version of the next major release of their Protocol for Metadata Harvesting.

PMH 2.0b is now available from the OAI website. A production release is expected in June 2002. Version 2.0 of the protocol adds a number of new features, announced earlier this year.

The protocol provides a means for repositories to expose their metadata for harvesting by search engines and portals, enabling users to search multiple repositories from a single screen.

There has been a great deal of activity in the OAI in the past year, with large numbers of libraries and repositories implementing the harvesting protocol.

More information is available on the OAI website.
