The Open Archives Initiative (OAI) has published the second major release of their protocol for harvesting metadata from digital repositories.

The protocol provides a standard way to allow libraries to expose catalogue information on their content for collection by search tools, allowing users to search through multiple catalogues without having to submit their search to each library in turn.

Version 2.0 of the specification improves a number of areas, particularly time and date handling and error reporting.
