MIT and HP are working together on a new content repository system. The idea is that large numbers of research institutes will federate all the data that they currently hold locally and make it available online. Data can be both raw data sets in various media, as well as academics' publications. The emphasis is very much on durability of material and controlled access, and, as such, presents a interesting new way to disseminate research online. The system does not yet support a Open Archives Initiative metadata harvesting protocol service, but will in the near future.

Wired news has a good overview of the project. Or have a look at the project's homepage.
