Lancaster team present evaluation engine for e-learning resource brokerage platform.
A team from the Department of Communication systems at Lancaster University developed an evaluation engine that helps rank e-learning resources in the "Universal Brokerage Platform for Learning Resources".
What the engine does is present users of the brokerage's resources with a two level, adaptive questionnaire that is tailored to specific roles. So a student would be asked to rate a resource on things like content, interactivity characteristics, presentation and user satisfaction, while a tutor might be queried about general quality related issues and examination data. The data that is collected in this way can then be extracted in a variety of ways and used to select resources. There is also an alert function to keep resource vendors aware of any quality issues.
The evaluation engine is currently in use at the The UNIVERSAL Brokerage Platform for Learning Resources, a European service that aims to become a very large learning object repository. The core of that system is a metadata engine that works with a modified version of IEEE LOM, Dublin Core and Vcard, which is stored in a XML:RDF repository. Parallel representations are to be kept in IEEE LOM, IMS and SCORM compliant formats.
