Techdis publishes VLE accessibility survey.
Techdis, the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) e-learning technology accessibility service, has published the results of its VLE accessibility survey. This is rather timely, as legislation will come into effect in September 2002 that will mandate inclusive access across the UK further and higher education sector.
The survey is based on the returns of a self-report questionnaire that was sent to seven VLE vendors. The questions deal with issues like the availability of accessibility policy statement and compliance to the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Accessibility Iniative (W3C WAI) guidelines.
Perhaps not surprisingly, the larger vendors do well on the provision of policy statements and the pursuit of standard compliance, though with some notable exceptions. The smaller vendors, however, do appear to be very responsive to specific needs, and are well aware of the necessity of inclusive access.
The full survey is available from the Techdis website.
