In the widely predicted period of consolidation in the e-learning market, two of the largest vendors have just completed a merger.

The new company, to be called SkillSoft, will hope to capitalise on Smartforce's strength in information technology courseware, and SkillSoft's position in business skills training. Overall, the sheer number of titles and the size of the support and sales arms will also help consolidate its position with its mainly large enterprise customers.

SkillSoft in particular has been active in pushing interoperability standards. Its content is AICC certified, and close to being SCORM compliant. The SkillSoft SkillSoft e-Learning Architecture learning management system (LMS) also has a degree of IMS and LRN compliance.
