The COLA project, run by the Scottish Colleges Open Learning Exchange Group (COLEG), has developed one of the first applications of the IEEE Learing Object Metadata (LOM) standard to online assessment.

COLA is commissioning questions in a wide range of subject areas and needs to capture the right data to help in selecting and reusing the thousands of assessment items currently under development across Scotland.

Now COLA has teamed up with the Technologies for Online Interoperable Assessment project (TOIA: www.toia.ac.uk) and CETIS to ensure the metadata collected is of maximum value without putting an unreasonable burden on question authors. The UK Common Metadata Framework, based on the IEEE LOM, has formed the basis for a new application profile for COLA. The COLA profile can be found in this word document.
