Debugging is *essential*

"the only real reason a human being would eyeball XML is for debugging purposes" -- well, that's a MAJOR feature of XML data. The difficulty of debugging binary protocols and formats has wasted enormous resources over the years. See the Microsoft Word format.
Also, consider how many of the protocols on the internet that are text-based: HTTP, SMTP, NNTP, IMAP, POP, etc. Surely that's unnecessary?
I don't disagree with the usefulness of a binary version of XML, though.
