in reponse to The Case for Creative Commons Textbooks
I've been thinking about collaborative open source textbooks for awhile, though from the perspective of a tech-savvy professor who finds textbooks limiting. Their production model isn't really flexible enough given all the possibilities opened up with the internet and CMS systems. Textbooks are too big, too expensive, and generally not focused enough to provide the rich pedagogical experience students benefit from.
So, I think there's a need to rethink the entire package here: distribution, production, rights, and the content model itself.
