Automated gathering of data from external sources.

Automated gathering of data from external sources.

In the case of repositories this usually means copying the metadata exposed by a service into a local application.

This may be a one-off operation activated by a user querying a federated search or it might be a regular operation. The data might be stored for future use (cached) or it might be returned direct to the user but not stored.
