Eight collected so far. Phase 2 Construct analytical framework for comparisons between EMLs. Phase 3 Build standard EML. Deliverables Document outlining conditions for a notational language to be classified as an educational modelling language. Working definition of an EML An EML is a semantically rich information model and binding describing the content and process within units of learning from a pedagogical perspective. Notes from discussion EMLS should focus on process not content. Need to decide whether or not runtime issues will be included in the definition of an EML EML is a specification not an implementation. EMLs must allow teachers to describe their teaching practice using their own vocabularies. EMLs aim to standardise the description of teaching and learning not to standardise teaching and learning itself. EMLs are descriptive not proscriptive. The project will compare EMLs but will not attempt to map between them. The project should also attempt to separate the model from the bindings, the EM from the EML. EMLs will not describe the production and authoring of resources, they cover the educational process. It has received 30 technical comments and 2 no votes out of 35. 10 issues are still under discussion on the LOM mailing list. It is unlikely there will be changes to the information model; most discussion is focussing on conformance etc. The basic structure is unlikely to change. Optimistically LOM 1.0 will be a standard by December 2001; pessimistically it will take until July 2002. The Ottawa Group (LOM, IMS, DC, Ariadne, EDNA, GEM) will produce a series of three papers. The first paper will appear in DLib. Paper 1: Principals of metadata. Paper 2: Using LOM and DCEM together. Paper 3: Metadata bindings. This will be a practice-oriented conference. The latest version of the Ariadne tools, which fully implement the LOM, will be released shortly. Prometeus HYPERLINK "http://www.prometeus.org/" http://www.prometeus.org/ Paul Lefrere, Open University Prometeus event Building a common approach to eLearning in Europe will be held in Mallorca on the 18th-19th November. Prometeus are keen to increase commercial participation. The EUs Sixth Framework may look at barriers to the adoption of technology. Repository of Taxonomies/Vocabularies for a European Learning Society: Status report/discussion Frans Van Assche, European Schoolnet Project Objectives The objective of this project group is to collect and organise a register of vocabularies, taxonomies and thesauri relevant to a European learning society, via an on-line repository. Deliverables to date A taxonomies and vocabularies repository that users can explore and contribute to. A vocabulary of terms concerning vocabularies used by the workshop. A draft report discussing issues and recommendations. Notes from discussion There was some discussion of the current usage of terms such as glossary, vocabulary, taxonomy and thesaurus. Frans Van Assche pointed out that the terms taxonomy and classification are often used interchangeably now although technically they are not the same. E.g. Classification: France / tourism / accommodation Taxonomy: Animal / mammal / dog The difference being that a mammal is a type of animal but tourism is not a type of France! Erik Duval confirmed that the LOM uses taxonomy as a general, rather than a specific term. The repository will accept multilingual entries but the repository interface will not be multilingual itself. It would be useful if the repository could link vocabularies that describe similar elements in difference metadata schemes. Further information All project deliverables and reports are available from the website at HYPERLINK "http://office.eun.org/kms/sites/cenisss/index.html" http://office.eun.org/kms/sites/cenisss/index.html Knowledge on Demand GuintiLabs Giunti contribute to the Content Packaging, Sequencing Lite and Digital Repositories working groups learn eXact Guinti will launch the learn eXact platform which implements various specifications at the end of October. learn eXact will implement dynamic metadata tagging. Knowledge on Demand 1.0 expands content packaging with prescriptive ruling (content sequencing rulings) integration and descriptive knowledge mapping. Xpackager features and functionality Will export different package formats including IMS, SCORM, LRN, WebCT, etc, etc, etc. Packages can be tagged with IMS, Dublin Core or customised metadata. Can import resources or content packages from databases or desktop and can add metadata to resources added from file. The first stage is to produce tagged resources before creating learning objects. The next stage is to produce content packages containing lessons, assessment and other resources. Can add SCORM conditions and KOD services to packages. Xpackager generates SCORM/IMS manifests the only product on the market to do this. Allows users to construct basic or advanced courses/conditions within the same package. Advanced users can create learning objects using templates, xml and stylesheets. Have created schemas for different types of learning objects. Generates XSL automatically. Future developments To define standards at the intra learning object level.
