The aim of this programme is to encourage widespread involvement by the UK Further and Higher education community in the development and re-use of electronic materials for learning and teaching. This Exchange for Learning programme will promote a community and structure for the reuse of digital Learning Objects. Although one of the authors is a member of the X4L steering group, this is a working document that represents the views of the authors only, rather than those of the full X4L steering group. However, this report will be used to progress the discussion of the development of a suitable infrastructure for X4L. The X4L approach The focus of the Exchange for Learning Programme (X4L) will be on projects that will foster change in online learning and teaching by exploring the potential of re-purposing and sharing content for use in a wide variety of educational environments. It is envisaged that projects will engage in pilot activity that may contribute to services in the future. The Exchange for Learning Programme (X4L) will explore the re-purposing of existing and forthcoming content, funded by JISC and other bodies, to make it suitable for use in multiple teaching and learning scenarios. The programme also aims to explore the process of integration or plugging in of re-usable learning objects into virtual and managed learning environments (MLEs/VLEs). The X4L Programme has the potential to: Increase the range and volume of materials accessible for use in learning and teaching. Define guidelines and processes for creating learning objects from digital content and for reusing these learning objects in a wide variety of teaching and learning environments and pedagogical scenarios. Establish mechanisms for interaction between local content developers and national teaching and learning resource repositories.
