Scenarios from the MLEs for Lifelong Learning projects

Why?

Scenarios describe typical uses of a system as narratives or stories. Scenarios will help practitioners, learners, systems developers and managers to have a shared understanding of the purpose of a system and how the system can benefit all stakeholders.

Scenarios describe typical uses of a system as narratives or stories. Use cases describe the major functions that a system will perform for the major actors, and also the goals that the system achieves for those actors along the way. (An actor may be a person or an electronic tool within the scenario). Thus use cases describe the requirements of a system, independent of its architecture or type.

Developing scenarios of use of a system, and use cases of key processes within scenarios, are essential steps towards developing formal specifications and standards relating to interoperability.

Scenarios and use cases will help practitioners, learners, systems developers and managers have a shared understanding of the purpose of a system and how it benefits all stakeholders. It is anticipated that, although systems may differ in their type, approach and structures, there will nevertheless be commonality of purpose between systems, and that use cases developed in relation to an individual system will be generic, and thus potentially reusable and transferable for use within the wider community.

The MLE4LLL Programme is facilitating this work to help the wider community to understand more about supporting transfer of learner

How?

Here are some examples of documents to support the construction of scenarios including those from workshops, courses a resource pack, and a further, forward looking paper 'Building on the scenarios methodology', which builds on this work.

Scenarios Resource Pack This is the Scenarios Resource Pack (Version March 2005).

Scenarios Resource Pack Annex This is the Scenarios Resource Pack Annex, which sets out an exercise to develop a scenario and the template to use for this. It includes a worked example.
