Joint Portfolio SIG & Lifelong Learning Group Meeting

This Portfolio SIG event was held jointly with the Lifelong Learning Group, at the University of Liverpool on Friday 28th April 2006, 10:00am to 4:00pm.

The meeting included presentations and opportunities for discussion around current work connecting e-portfolio and lifelong learning, including 14-19, FE, and HE, and provisionally will include aspects of policy, case studies centred on vocational and work-based learners, and a reference model for e-portfolio articulated around transition points in lifelong learning.

Programme

10:00 - 10:30 Registration and refreshments

10:45 - 11:15 Welcome and Introduction
Clive Church and Helen Richardson, CETIS.
Clive extended his introduction to cover key messages from the BECTA perspective, as Stuart Jones and Amanda Black were unable to attend. (PowerPoint slides here.)
11:15 - 12:15 RIPPLLing our way to a Reference Model
Angela Smallwood, University of Nottingham, and Clive Church, CETIS.
Lifelong Learning and Portfolio combined literally for this session in which Clive and Angela presented and led discussions of the synergies between two JISC projects led by the University of Nottingham: the RIPPLL project (a regional approach to linking schools, colleges, universities, employers) and the ePortfolio Reference Model project. (PowerPoint slides here.)
Portfolio building by work-based learners
Stuart Jones and Amanda Black, BECTA.
Amanda and Stuart were unfortunately both unable to attend. However, Stuart has let us have some slides which were in preparation.
12:15 - 13:00 FE and HE perspectives on e-portfolio developments
Janet Strivens, University of Liverpool.
Janet drew on her experience from the JISC TransPortALL (MLE4LL) Project, based at Liverpool, the evaluation of the FILEPASS (DeL) project based at UCLAN and a recent survey carried out for the DfES to talk about cultural differences between FE and HE in relation to e-portfolio developments (from both staff and student perspectives) - and what we can learn from it. (PowerPoint slides here.)
13:00 - 14:00 Lunch and networking

14:15 - 14:45 EPICS and beyond
Simon Cotterill, University of Newcastle
Simon talked about some of the technical and pedagogic issues raised through the EPICS regional ePortfolios project in the North East (part of the JISC Distributed e-Learning strand). He also drew on the experiences of developing and implementing the ePET portfolio and associated interoperability facilities. http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=epics (PowerPoint slides here - large file - 2.5 Mbyte.)
