Why attenuation does not equate with hierarchy

I gave a somewhat flip answer to a serious question the other day. The actual answer is presented below.

this is a diagram showing how for any given node, N, then regardless of the type of network topology (flat, hierarchic, semilattice, matrix) the variety of the set of nodes connected to N are greater than the variety of N.
